Tonight for dinner we had pasta made in Spain, Chilean wine, and bread from right here in Bocas del Toro. I don't know where the garlic came from, but I saw some that was a product of China. The peanut butter I bought is imported from India, the tortillas are from Guatemala. One thing noticeably missing are the vegetables. I have noticed this in other countries; the island is bursting with vegetation, but you can't buy greens at the grocery store. It may be a cultural mistranslation and I should be looking at the farmers' market instead, but it has always struck me as odd that in such a lively and abundant place, fresh quality vegetables are scarce and not readily available. Thoughts, travelers?
On a related note, here are things that I've bought that are from Panama: rice, black beans, pasta (different brand), jam, local bread, coffee, crackers, cookies, and more bananas than you could ever dream of.
