Langosta
This evening, just as the sun was setting, an elderly gentleman in a traditional wooden canoe paddled up to our porch and offered me lobster; the bottom of his boat was filled with fresh live ones which he was selling for $4 apiece. I knew that my vegetarian husband and daughter and animal-loving son would be horrified at the thought of cooking one alive, as good as a lobster might sound to me, so I declined. He seemed a little dejected, and now I feel like a jerk for not buying one, as I'm sure he's supporting his family by selling them. If he comes back, I'm going to buy a couple and just let them go, and he can catch them again tomorrow.

Update: Another local man selling lobster paddled up to our dock today. Apparently I was mistaken about the price: I gave him $5 and he gave us 4 lobsters! We waited till he was well out of sight and then let them go off the dock. Three swam away, but one looked like he wasn't going to make it and stayed on his back, so we put him in the freezer and Jo and I will cook him later.
